Sex Change Treatments Offered

Valley Children’s Hospital does not advertise to perform any sex change treatments for minors.

In October 2021, Dr. Kevin Nguyen received an award for including pronouns as a field item within hospital forms.

“A lasting result of Dr. Nguyen’s work was the inclusion of new fields into Valley Children’s electronic medical record (EMR) patient information forms, including chosen names, pronouns and items for social worker follow-up. By having these fields directly in the EMR, anyone on the healthcare team can ensure they are filled in with the information that makes the patient and family feel respected and accepted. Because a patient’s medical record in the EMR ‘follows’ them throughout their hospital stay, any care member who accesses the record will know to use the patient’s chosen name and/or pronoun, and any new documentation automatically populates with that information, so it becomes a natural part of the care team’s workflow.”

Dr. Nikki Webb authored a blog on the importance of using correct pronouns.

“Hello. My name is Nikki and my pronouns are she/her/hers. Have you ever had someone call you by the wrong name or make an assumption about your identity that was untrue? If you have, you know how uncomfortable that can feel. Sometimes, it’s fairly easy to correct the other person and other times it’s not. There are a lot of factors that play into how comfortable and affirming, or uncomfortable and potentially even unsafe, the spaces we create are. Now imagine that someone else misjudges a huge, core aspect of who you are, like your gender identity. For many of us, our gender identity corresponds to the sex we were assigned at birth. The term for this is cisgender. But for many others, this is not the case. For transgender and gender nonbinary people, the sex they were assigned at birth does not reflect who they are, and it can be incredibly painful and stigmatizing when they are misgendered.”
