Nemours Alfred I. DuPont Children’s Hospital is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit hospital and part of Nemours Children’s Health, located in Wilmington, Delaware. Nemours Children’s Health operates a “Gender Wellness Program.” This program offers hormone therapy, mental health services, and social work services. Claims data confirms that Nemours billed for hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and sex change surgeries for minors. On average, providers at Nemours Children’s Hospital wrote 32 gender-related prescriptions per patient from 2019 to 2023.
For more information on the specific procedure and diagnostic codes and other methodology used to make these determination, read our white paper here.
Key Findings
In 2015, Nemours Children’s Health opened their Gender Wellness Program that offers a variety of sex change treatments, including hormone therapy, psychological services, and social work resources. They have had 230+ patient visits relating to “transgender care.”
The Gender Wellness Clinic has seen explosive growth from when it was first introduced. Dr. Evan Graber claimed that despite seeing his first transgender patient in 2015, he had nearly 50 patients in 2018 and close to 100 patients in 2019, saying, “Ten years ago, even five years ago, this was rare.”
Graber, a pediatric endocrinologist, worked with the first transgender patient at Nemours Children’s Health. He has suggested hormone therapy and puberty blockers for children based not on their age, but for those “who feel they are ready.”
Dr. Anthony Alioto was hired on as the Director for Pediatric Psychology, helping lead the Gender Wellness Program at Nemours Children’s Health. He claims that the media has not caused the rise in transgenderism, but rather helped “ease the confusion and pain” of children experiencing gender dysphoria.
In September 2019, the Masterson family was interviewed about their experience at Nemours Children’s Health where two of their children were treated for gender dysphoria. After treatment, which included puberty blockers, Mary Masterson said, “anybody I meet who has transgender kids, I send them to duPont.”
In June 2022, Nemours Children’s Health was named an “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader” by The Human Rights Campaign.
