Dayton Children’s Hospital is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit hospital located in Dayton, Ohio. The hospital does not currently list sex change treatments under the services it offers; however, an archived version of the hospital’s website notes that as recently as April 2024, the hospital listed “gender dysphoria” as a condition it would treat. Reports also indicate the hospital provided sex change interventions to “youth patients.” The hospital previously issued statements indicating its support for children’s access to “gender-affirming care.” Ohio currently bans gender medical interventions – including hormones, puberty blockers, and surgeries – for children after a judge ruled August 6, 2024 that the state’s law banning these interventions can go into effect.

For more information on the specific procedure and diagnostic codes and other methodology used to make these determination, read our white paper here.

Key Findings

Although Dayton Children’s Hospital does not list sex change treatments among the services it offers, a previously archived version of its website dated April 2, 2024, indicates that the hospital recently removed “gender dysphoria” from the list of services.

According to an April 2024 job posting for an “Adolescent Medicine Physician – Division Chief” from Dayton Children’s Hospital LinkedIn profile, the hospital offers specialty care services including “gender-affirming care for all youth.”

Dr. Kelly Blankenship, Associate Chief Medical Officer for Behavioral Health, stated in 2023, “we believe all young people should have access to comprehensive, developmentally appropriate, mental health care and gender-affirming health care” and “defended the use of hormone treatment for minors.”
