Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a nonprofit hospital located in Los Angeles, California. The hospital operates the Center for Transyouth Health and Development (CTYHD), which it describes as one of the oldest “transyouth” programs in the country. The hospital advertises sex change treatments under the services it provides. Claims data shows the hospital has billed for hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and sex change surgeries for minors.
For more information on the specific procedure and diagnostic codes and other methodology used to make these determination, read our white paper here.
Key Findings
The Center for Transyouth Health and Development (CTYHD) states that it differentiates itself from other gender programs by rejecting “the gatekeeper model of care” and instead focuses on “how to help our patients and families in the least restrictive environment possible.”
From 2015 to 2017, CTYHD’s patient load increased from 415 to over 900. The organization provides services up to the age of 25. It claims its youngest patients, as young as three years old, “receive no medical interventions, just counseling.”
In 2016, CTYHD treated 725 trans youth patients, with the youngest being three years old.
In 2019, CTYHD purportedly received “five new young people” every week and saw a “a huge rise in teenage girls and a rise in non-binary identities.”
CTYHD is led by its medical director Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy, an outspoken proponent of so-called “gender-affirming care.” She has argued that psychological assessments are not needed for children transitioning, endorsed providing “cross-sex hormones to kids as young as 12,” and maintained that “watchful waiting” “amounts to neglect.”
CTYHD has previously partnered with the Los Angeles Unified School District to provide gender resources to children. The clinic has given a presentation to LAUSD that “showcased a wide range of irreversible medical treatments.”
The Children’s Hospital Los Angeles treated a transgender youth who was transitioning from female to male. Under the direction of Dr. Olson, CTYHD gave this youth testosterone treatment.
