Children’s Hospital Colorado at Colorado Springs is the Colorado Springs location of Children’s Hospital Colorado, a nonprofit hospital system affiliated with University of Colorado School of Medicine. The hospital system offers puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and mental health services to minors through its gender clinic, the TRUE Center for Gender Diversity. Claims data shows the Colorado Springs location has billed for hormone therapy for minors. On average, the hospital prescribes 36 gender-related prescriptions per patient.

Key Findings

Children’s Hospital Colorado at Colorado Springs belongs to the Children’s Hospital Colorado health system. The system offers gender-affirming care for minors through its TRUE Center for Gender Diversity. No information was identified that indicates Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs offers sex change treatments.

In July 2023, Children’s Hospital Colorado said that it would stop “performing chest reconstruction on transgender patients, though it will continue to offer non-surgical gender-affirming care.” It had also previously offered hysterectomies to patients 18 and older.

Children’s Hospital Colorado would continue to provide “nonsurgical gender-affirming care” including hormone therapy, gender counseling and nutrition services.

In February 2024, the ACLU of Colorado filed a lawsuit on behalf of an 18-year-old whose “gender-affirming” surgery was called off at Children’s Hospital Colorado.  

In May 2021, Children’s Health Colorado CEO Jena Hausmann held a press conference declaring an emergency in children’s mental health. In May 2021, Chief Medical Officer David Brumbaugh stated that “I’ll tell you I’ve never seen anything like the demand for mental health services we’ve seen at Children’s in the last 15 months.”

Children’s Hospital Colorado operates the TRUE Center for Gender Diversity. TRUE stands for “trust, respect, understand, emerge.” There is no minimum age limit for sex change treatments listed on the center’s webpage.
